Nation erupts in outrage over Mumbai gang-rape

New Delhi, Aug 23: The gang-rape of a young photojournalist in Mumbai triggered an avalanche of outrage across the country on Friday and condemned as despicable and shameful stirring memories of a similar attack last December in New Delhi that led to nation-wide protests.

As people from all walks of life voiced their anguish, Political parties, media associations and Bollywood were one in demanding harshest punishment to the perpetrators of the crime in a city which is seen as far safer for women than the national capital. The attack also had its echo in Rajya Sabha which erupted in anger with agitated members expressing serious concern over increasing atrocities on women and the government assuring "harshest" action against the culprits.

Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal said sex assaults must be dealt with "in the severest manner".

"We cannot afford to let our women and children live in insecurity and must make sure that such attacks against women are dealt in the severest manner," he said.

Hundreds of people including members of several journalists' associations gathered in south Mumbai to stage a silent protest. Some wore black armbands, while others carried placards reading "Stop rape" and "City of shame."

Media associations in Chennai said the "horrifying incident" has shocked the entire country once again raising the issue of safety of women.

"Despicable! We are shamed! How long  and  God forbid, how many more before the criminals are punished? Wake up, India!," said BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman.

"Helpless to say the least...Words like "devastated".."disgusted" mean nothing at a time like this! gang-rape in my city... I feel ashamed," lamented Producer-Director Karan Johar.

Some even sniped at the Union Ministry of Home affairs and its equivalent in Maharashtra for failing to enhance the safety of women in the country since the Delhi gang-rape incident last December and after enactment of new laws.

BJP's Smriti Irani while raising the issue during Zero Hour in Rajya Sabha asked what steps had been initiated to prevent recurrence of such incidents even after repeated assurances of improving law and order condition in the aftermath of Delhi gang-rape and targeted the Centre and the Maharashtra government.

Kiran Bedi, former IPS officer said, "Another shame! A photo journ gang-raped by 5 men in Mumbai. No wonder India is considered most unsafe place for women amongst G-30 countries."

The Twitter was also abuzz with rage over the gang-rape.

"... Thousands of women aren’t safe in a country that demands of them patriotism, sacrifices and taxes," said one tweet. Some said legislations are merely not enough.

"If punishment is strict, rape incidents can be avoided," said a Jadavpur university student, while a Bhopal housewife said women and even shcool girls are not safe anymore. PTI

‘Job mela —Tuki Govt’s one of best initiatives’

ITANAGAR, Aug 23: The two-day job mela beginning from August 30 next is the best initiative of the GoAP, particularly Chief Minister Nabam Tuki towards generating employment avenues for the unemployed youth with a target to create one lakh jobs during 12th Five Year Plan, Arunachal Pradesh State Medicinal Plant Board chairman Bamang Felix today said.

Creation of job opportunities in this land-locked state is difficult with hardly any large industry either in private or government sector, Felix said, adding the job mela involving dozens of private and government sector service providers is a maiden initiative of the CM which deserves appreciation from all quarters.

The employment opportunities in remote districts, like Kurung Kumey are much less than that of other districts. Therefore, I would make a fervent appeal to those aspiring to earn a decent livelihood not to miss the opportunity.

The job mela would ensure skilling of our youth followed by placement without any expenditure involved, Felix said, adding such initiative by any government in the country is rare.

“The need of the hour is for changing our attitude to respect the dignity of labour which holds the key to speedy and all-round development of our state blessed with huge natural resources. It would be possible to make the best use of the natural resources and turn the vast idle land productive if our youth acquire technical knowledge that would turn money spinner for them,” Felix reasoned.

The day our youth realise the truth – God helps them who helps themselves – they would be second to none, the young lawmaker said with confidence.

…in denial

Appu Gapak

It has been one year and 13 days since journalist Tongam Rina was shot at while entering her office in Itanagar last year on July 15. And though the Capital police claimed to have made a breakthrough into the case, it is yet to arrest the alleged mastermind of the case, Yumlam Achung.

Rina was admitted in a critical condition to the Ramakrishna Mission Hospital with the bullet stuck inside after hitting at left waist touching the spinal cord and piercing the intestine. Three weeks later, she was transferred to the Fortis Healthcare, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. Though she may look healthy now, but till date, she has not fully recovered. The trauma that she went through still haunts her.

It was appalling that the police could not find out the culprit/s behind the attack for almost a year.

And then when the incident was about to complete a year, just five days earlier, on July 10, it came out with revelation of the person/s involved in the attack.

The report from the police read: “…investigation into journalist Tongam Rina shooting case has been completed and prima facie case well established against three accused - Raju Gurung, Ajit Pegu and Yumlam Achung. Achung, the mastermind behind the attack has assigned Raju Gurung and Ajit Pegu for the job. The motive of the crime was that Achung wanted to harm Tongam Rina for not highlighting him and his organization’s activities in her newspaper. He and his supporters’ had ransacked Arunachal Times office on several occasions prior to this incident.”

It was also informed that the forensic examination of weapons recovered has confirmed its use in commission of crime and that Achung was absconding.

Prior to this, Achung was named mastermind of a vandalism attack in The Arunachal Times office that happened on April 15 and the reason quoted for the attack had been the same- ‘for not highlighting him in the paper.’

Except that the news of the breakthrough as published and broadcast all over, but in real, the mastermind, as the police claim, was not arrested yet. He had been absconding, according to the police.

And then interestingly, the absconding accused, Yumlam Achung gives out a press statement, signed, just two days after, on July 12, denying his involvement in the case. Till then, as told by the police, he is absconding and clarifying away to the glory.

And then another shocker came. Spouses of Yumlam Achung and another accused Raju Gurung too came out with explanations about how their husbands were innocent.

Though, the other two accused, Raju Gurung and Ajit Pegu, have been put behind bars, Yumlam Achung is yet to be arrested even after passing of a month and 13 days of the disclosure.

While many of us are still trying to come to term with the reason that got her attacked and sincerity of the police to work out the case, we cannot help but think that there’s more to it than what’s just on the show.

NgunuZiro bids for waste free schools

ITANAGAR, Aug 23: In its continuing efforts to promote ‘Zero Waste Schools’ at Ziro, NgunuZiro today organized its second program at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV), Ziro to  ensure sustainable garbage management in Ziro Valley to keep the place clean and green.

Today’s program mainly aimed at sensitizing the students and staff of the school about the concept of zero waste management so that the school can implement the concept.

Two resource persons, Punyo Chada and Roto Chobin, who are trained on Zero Waste Management concept, explained the current practice of garbage management and the risks in such practices like dumping, burning, burying and even landfills. They then gave an overview of zero waste management and the feasibility of the school in implementing it.

Dr. Tage Kanno exhorted the students and the school authority to start zero waste management and establish the school as a model one.

It may be mentioned that a similar program was conducted in the Skylark School, Hapoli on August 17.

NgunuZiro has been advocating introduction of zero waste management for Ziro township since two years now when a workshop on solid waste management was conducted in collaboration with the District Administration and the Urban Development and Housing Department of Lower Subansiri District.

Though several positive steps were taken up by the administration and the sanitation in Ziro town has improved manifold, zero waste management concept has not yet been taken up satisfactorily.

It was then that NgunuZiro initiated the strategy to involve the schools by promoting “Zero Waste School” in the valley.

“Ziro Waste Schools” by definition, will not produce any garbage from the institution. Instead, all discards will be considered as resources and they will be reused and recycled in the schools themselves.

More schools in Ziro valley will be taken up in the coming days so that they become models for other schools and business establishments to emulate.
